Job Description

Under the direction of the Optometry Manager, you will provide specialty contact lens exams and general eye care within the field of optometry at the highest level of clinical practice. As an Optometrist 4, you will be expected to publish, lecture and/or perform research within the area of optometric specialty and act as a leader within the profession. Your regular duties will include handling triage visits, emergent visits referred by the primary care department, prescribing optical devices, and procedures and prescribing pharmaceutical agents. You will also provide optometric support for the Department of Ophthalmology for UCDH patients. You will perform difficult evaluations and fittings of contact lens patients of all ages, at various locations, including Sacramento, Roseville, and Folsom. Additionally, will have the opportunity to teach residents and fellows on a regular basis in the optics course and other educational sessions, as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed as a Doctor of Optometry, as required by the California State Board of Optometry.
  • Must have a California Topical Pharmaceutical Agents license.
  • Doctoral degree in optometry issued by an accredited school/college of optometry.
  • Experience in recognizing conditions and pathology that require specialty intervention.
  • Experience in the use of lensometer, phoropter, keratometer, radiuscope, tonometers, (Goldmann, Tonopen, Icare), soft and rigid contact lenses, slit lamp biomicroscope, and retinoscope.
  • Experience carrying out specialized clinical procedures including contact lens evaluation and fitting and refraction on patients ranging from pediatric through geriatric.
  • Extensive prior experience performing contact lens evaluations and fittings of contact lens patients in a clinical setting, not including educational experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a residency program within the area of specialty.

Department Description

The Optometry Department is a division of the UC Davis Eye Center that works cohesively with the Department of Ophthalmology in a hospital based and tertiary care outpatient setting. The Optometry Department is both an academic and medical clinic providing state of the art, comprehensive optometric eye care. The optometrists are an integral part of a patient's healthcare team, skilled in vision care, specialty therapeutic contact lens fittings and ocular disease. The optometrists collaborate with physicians in other medical specialties, as well as with ophthalmology to ensure proper eye health and treatment for patients in our community. The department assists in instructing the ophthalmology residents in optics, refraction, retinoscopy and contact lenses.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs and the dexterity to lift charts from low cabinets.
  • Must be able to function in a busy, noisy, fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to travel up to 50 miles a day.
