In collaboration with the attending physician and pharmacist, the physician assistant will provide consultation for pain management of hospitalized patients. This includes, but is not limited to, patient evaluation, reviewing their medical history, and collaborating with the primary team to develop a therapy or treatment plan to help alleviate pain and suffering. The physician assistant will also use their knowledge and pain management skills to identify effective non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment options. The physician assistant will possess a high level of independent clinical decision-making and be able to work autonomously and in a team-based environment to provide compassionate patient centered care.
To provide independent advanced practice provider clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis. Patient management decisions will be independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team. Physician assistants are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents, and other ancillary staff.
Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience, and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the California Physician assistant board.

Department Description
Under the direction of the hospitalist service, the in-patient physician assistant will provide support for the daily management of hospitalized patients. This includes, but is not limited to, triage of new medical problems, admissions as assigned, evaluation and management of service patients, ordering medications, ordering and interpreting diagnostics, and providing support for daily progress notes or discharge functions. Provide daily support for the in-patient hospitalist service and manage assigned patient load independently without unreasonable support from physician colleagues. Complete assigned work within the space of the daily shift, support admissions as needed, complete required medical record documentation. Support patient and family transition home with patient education.
