The Mission articulates why our ministry exists. The Chief Mission Officer (CMO) helps to shape and influence how the Mission, Values, Vision and Promise are lived out in the daily life of our ministry. This Mission work touches on all aspects of organizational life including governance, strategy, operations, whole person care and the nurturing of our caregivers. Sustaining a culture consistent with the Mission and values requires vigilance at all times especially during times of change and transition to maintain our Catholic identity and to ensure constant alignment with whom we say we are.

FOCUS:

  • Ministry Leadership participation.
  • Mission and Values integration.
  • Formation and other programs that nourish and sustain caregivers.
  • Ethics services.
  • Partnership with Spiritual Care providers and the service area Spiritual Health leader.
  • Relationships with local religious leaders within the ministry's geographic service area.
  • Helping to support and build awareness of PSJH's partnerships with the local community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Strategic leadership and prophetic voice (While living the Mission is the responsibility of every caregiver within Providence St. Joseph Health, the Ministry Chief Mission Officer has the special responsibility of courageously holding the Mission focus as PSJH moves into the future.) :
  • Ministry CMO participates as a member of the Ministry senior leadership team.
  • Participates in key ministry leadership groups for strategy and planning.
  • Actively partners with the service-area and divisional Mission teams, rotating as needed to assist other Northern California Mission colleagues in periodic in-person assignments at sister ministries.
  • Collaborates in the implementation of strategic initiatives at the Ministry level.
  • In collaboration with the service area Clinical Ethicist, supports ongoing Ethics education and facilitates the use of the PSJH Mission and Values Discernment processes.
  • Leads integration of Mission and Values into policies, procedures, objectives, and services in operational areas in alignment with the Northern California service area, South Division, and system.
  • Participates in interviews and orientations for ministry leadership to assure Mission and Values alignment.
  • Maintains effective relationship with other operational and shared services leaders as well as the Community Ministry Board (CMB), Foundation Board, and Advisory Councils for Board formation and Mission accountability in the Ministry.
  • Formation (Continuing the ministry of PSJH over generations requires special attention by all leaders. The Ministry CMO is key in walking with those in leadership as well as frontline caregivers to engage in formation for their ongoing growth as persons and as health professionals.) :
  • Works with the system formation team and service-area CMO to ensure effective leadership formation as well as ongoing formation within the ministry, including the hospital board and Foundation board.
  • Promotes Mission assimilation with new caregivers.
  • Mentors leaders and caregivers in Mission Integration and Values interpretation.
  • Heritage and Identity (Along with our Sponsors, the Ministry CMO works on sustaining our PSJH heritage and Catholic identity, so the Mission and Values are rooted in all we do.) :
  • Oversees and participates in delivering orientation programs to introduce caregivers, leaders, providers, and affiliates to the PSJH Heritage, Mission, Values, Vision and Promise.
  • Initiates and supports events/rituals for observing and celebrating special feasts tied to our Mission, Values, history, life of our Sponsors, and Founders of the local ministries.
  • Sustains the ministry's Catholic identity while welcoming and helping to affirm the community's rich diversity.
  • Works with the service-area CMO and fellow Mission colleagues to complete Mission assessments on a regular basis.
  • Ethics (The Ministry CMO collaborates with service-area and system Ethics and Theology leaders to maintain trust in the ministry's integrity. This includes partnering to support Ethics education, policies and priorities. Responsibilities are shared with the service-area Clinical Ethicist.) :
  • Serve on the local Ethics committee.
  • May serve on a service-area Ethics council.
  • Ministry CMO keeps informed of any critical issues that put the ministry's identity at risk or could cause scandal in the community and informs the service-area CMO of such issues.
  • Ensures availability and effectiveness of 24/7 Ethics case consultation services.
  • Oversees timely development and review of policies and procedures for addressing ethical issues in patient care, clinical research, and ministry responsibility as applicable.
  • Participates in or facilitates the use of the PSJH Mission and Values Discernment process as directed.
  • Helps to promote ongoing clinical and organizational ethics education within the ministry as a means of building ethics capacity and sensitivity among caregivers.
  • Mission-inspired culture (A Mission inspired culture is one in which the members of PSJH animate both the purpose and core values of the organization through their words and behaviors.)
  • Justice in the Workplace:
  • Works with Human Resources (HR) and other disciplines to ensure practices align with Catholic Social Teachings (Human Dignity, Subsidiarity, Participation, Rights of the Worker, Preferential Option for the Poor).
  • Collaborates with Ministry leadership to ensure that programs and services address caregiver flourishing, wellbeing, resilience, diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Provides support for caregivers during significant workforce changes in collaboration with Ministry HR professionals and chaplains.
  • Assists with cultural and Mission integration of partner organizations
  • Supports Spiritual Care (While the chaplains who make up the Spiritual Care team do not report directly to the Chief Mission Officer, the CMO does partner with Spiritual Health leadership in supporting whole person care for all we serve.):
  • Partners with off-site and on-site Spiritual Care representatives to promote excellence in Spiritual Care, including sacramental ministry to benefit patients, visitors and caregivers.
  • Maintains a focus on organizational spirituality to nurture the emotional, spiritual, social and physical well-being of caregivers.
  • Supports Community Health Investment/Community Partnerships (Our Community Health Investment work and community partnerships demonstrate our commitments to those who are poor and vulnerable and to advance Health for a Better World.):
  • Advances and celebrates caregiver participation in PSJH-sponsored:
  • International service trips.
  • Domestic volunteer activities.
  • Environmental stewardship across the ministry, including Green Teams.
  • Supports ministry Community Health Needs Assessment processes, as applicable; contributes to Community Health Investment storytelling as requested; and collaborates with Community Health Investment team members to promote and maintain relationships with other aligned community partners and agencies.
  • Integrates Community Health Investment awareness into ongoing formation activities.
  • Partners with ministry Foundation / philanthropic team members to thank and recognize major donors and show how their gifts of time, talent and treasure contribute to the Mission.
  • Offers internship opportunities and / or mentors University of Providence theology students and discerning Mission leaders, as requested.
  • Supports and advances internal stakeholder engagement in Community Health Investment activities and community partnerships.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Health Care Mission or related field of ministry
  • Specialized field training in ethics, formation, or spiritual care
  • Formal training in Ethics (preferred)
  • 10 or more years of increasing responsibilities as a health care professional or administration of Mission-related programs or services with 8 years of leadership experience (preferred)
  • Thorough knowledge of the teachings and principles and traditions of the Catholic Church
  • Thorough understanding of Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services
  • Demonstrates maturity, judgment, and leadership to be an effective and trusted contributor and colleague to the Ministry senior leadership team to inspire and influence others in pursuit of the goals of the ministry and PSJH
  • Demonstrated competence in collaborative processes, change management and culture change, group facilitation, public speaking, verbal and written communication, and continuous improvement
  • Understanding the principles and practices of adult learning
  • Theoretical and practical understanding, rooted in sound theology, of the Mission and Values of PSJH and the health care ministry of the Catholic Church
  • Demonstrate understanding the fundamentals and challenges of healthcare operations
  • Communicates an integrated and balanced personal spirituality that aligns with PSJH as a Catholic ministry. Able to articulate the connections between personal and organization spirituality and the workplace
  • Able to engage individuals from diverse religious, spiritual and cultural backgrounds in understanding and appreciating their role as leaders of a Catholic ministry while honoring their own traditions
  • Demonstrates personal and interpersonal skills that engender confidence, trust, and credibility among peers, caregivers, volunteers, medical staff, patients, visitors, and community members
  • Able to lead, inspire and influence others in the pursuit of PSJH vision and strategic goals. Confidence to be a prophetic voice

A practicing member of the Catholic Church (preferred).
