Position Overview
The Coordinator, Student Government serves as the lead advisor to Marquette University Student Government, which includes oversight of the organization operations as related to their function within the larger university community, include but is not limited to budgetary oversight advising; oversight of their elections; advising the student government executive officers, senate, judicial administrator, elections coordinator, and senior speaker coordinator; advising MUSG's student organization funding process; and coordinating the transitions of officers and operations each academic year.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Advise student government executive officers, which include president, executive vice president, outreach vice president, financial vice president, communications vice president, legislative vice president, programs vice president, and judicial administrator, providing guidance on their roles and responsibilities.
  • One on one advising meetings (weekly/biweekly)
  • Counsel officers on interpretation of the MUSG governing documents
  • Perform regular checks of officer/senator eligibility.
  • Facilitate leadership development opportunities for officers
2. Attend/advise MUSG functional area and committee meetings, including:
  • Weekly student organization funding meetings
  • Weekly senate meetings
  • Executive board meetings
  • MUSG training/retreats
  • Election committee meetings
  • Budget committee meetings
  • Officer selection committees
  • Other committees as needed.
3. Oversee student government fall and spring elections.
  • Advise elections coordinator
  • Prepare voting list and ballots
  • Counsel election committee on hearings
  • Certify election results
  • Work with outgoing officers to plan inauguration
4. Advise oversight of MUSG budget.
  • Serve as approver for requisitions and purchases
  • Facilitate purchases for student organizations who are approved for up front funding
  • Assist executive vice president and financial vice president with setting the student organization funding timeline
  • Provide oversight of and guidance for the funding reimbursement processes
  • Provide oversight and guidance on monthly budget reconciliation as prompted by the Office of the Comptroller
  • Advise on yearly budget planning, tracking, and expenditures
5. Oversee the process to appoint student representatives to university committees (Academic Senate and its committees, committees under the Provost, Student Affairs committees, other departmental committees as needed).
  • Verify student eligibility (check grades and conduct)
  • Communicate to committee chairs and representatives regarding appointments
6. Keep MUSG timeline of operations on track
  • Assist with officer transitions
  • Assist with senior speaker processes
  • Assist with student government event planning (retreats, info sessions, recognition program, and others as needed).
7. Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A bachelor's degree in Education or related field

A minimum of 2 years of experience in higher education or related field required.

Knowledge of fiscal/accounting practices.

Experience advising/supervising college students.

Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues and best practices.

Ability to work nights and weekends.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A master's degree is Student Affairs in Higher Education or related field .

Knowledge of student development theory and experience applying theory to practice.

Knowledge of/experience with assessment data for continuous improvement to meet current student needs.
