Description

To perform a full range of custodial duties related to the care, maintenance and cleaning of assigned buildings and facilities; report unsatisfactory or dangerous conditions to higher level staff and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a deep class with the Custodian I classification in which incumbents shall be assigned to any level, provided they possess the required education, experience and/or certification for the class to which they are to be assigned.  Incumbents shall be advanced to the higher level classification upon successful completion of the qualifications needed for the higher level class.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from an assigned supervisor.

Responsibilities and Duties

Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Perform a variety of custodial duties related to the care, maintenance and cleaning of College buildings and facilities.
  2. Sweep, vacuum, mop, wax, strip and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  3. Clean and sanitize restroom facilities and fixtures including sinks, urinals and toilets; wash windows, mirrors and walls; clean and sanitize showers; replenish supplies in restrooms.
  4. Dust and polish furniture, woodwork and fixtures; clean desks and counter tops; erase any remaining chalk or ink from boards; replace chalks or pens; replace lights and clean and adjust shades and blinds.
  5. Empty, clean and sanitize waste receptacles; pick up paper, litter and other debris in classrooms, offices and stairwells.
  6. Assist to move and arrange furniture and set up rooms for meetings, as requested. 
  7. Survey buildings and grounds for possible hazards and notify security; report possible problems and damage.
  8. Secure District rooms and facilities at night if requested; open gates and classrooms in the morning, as requested.
  9. Restock and collect money from assigned campus vending machines.
  10. Perform special assignments and carry out instructions given by assigned supervisory staff.  Assist faculty and staff with related concerns.
  11. Work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.
  12. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Operations, services and activities of a custodial program.
  • Tools, equipment and supplies used in providing comprehensive custodial and minor building maintenance services.
  • Knowledge of safe use of cleaning products.
  • Principles of sanitation and disinfecting.
  • Safe use of various cleaning chemicals and supplies.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
Ability to:
  • Perform a variety of custodial and maintenance activities.
  • Work individually and as a team.
  • Explain and comply with department policies and procedures.
  • Utilize a variety of cleaning chemicals and supplies in a safe and effective manner.
  • Manage time and follow established cleaning priorities.
  • Identify custodial and maintenance needs and initiate corrective actions.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
  • Frequent to continuous walking and standing; heaving lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. unassisted; occasional bending and twisting of the waist and neck, occasional squatting.  
Education and Experience Requirements: 
 
Education:
Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent.

Experience:
One year of custodial or janitorial experience.
